STUDY AIDS FOR THE OLD TESTAMENT HEBREW SCHOLLAR

Here you will find listed braille copies of Old Testament Hebrew and Greek study aids such as a primer and Old Testament texts in Hebrew, Greek and some Aramaic. Most will include accents reflective of current braille coding. At present most of the Hebrew Bible texts are intended to be read on a refreshable braille display. Listed below also are some additional links you might want to check out.

Click here to download a zip file of the Leningrad pointed and fully accented Hebrew Bible in braille format. The folder contains an instruction file and each book is in its own file. Prepared by Ray McAllister, PhD, as are many of the Old Testament Hebrew, Aramaic and Septuagint documents.
The Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) pointed, unaccented Hebrew Bible in a zip file can be downloaded here. Contains an instruction file.
An unpointed Hebrew Bible in a zip file and in the public domain can be downloaded here. The file contains both individual book files and a single file, all.brf, combining all files for easier searching. Also included is an insttruction file which explains the coding.
The Aleppo Hebrew Bible in braille code with vowels and accents in a zip file. Instruction file included. In the public domain.
The Jewish Publication Society English translation of the Hebrew Bible, 1917. Posted here in a zip file. Instruction file included.
Hebrew Bible with Parsing in a zip file. Included is the entire BHS Hebrew Bible with parsing and an Aramaic word list. Because the Aramaic portions do not have English translations, an Aramaic vocabulary list is provided named a.brf. Also included is an instruction file explaining all the coding.
The Samaritan Pentateuch in a zip file. Used by some earlier textual critics much like the Septuagint before older Hebrew manuscripts, i.e., Dead Sea Scrolls, were discovered.
Click here to download the Septuagint in both Greek and English versions compressed in a zipped file. The Greek has been converted to braille code but not the English translation. This work was originally prepared by Ray McAllister, Phd, using a BrailleNote but should work satisfactorily on any braille display device.

The original Elephantine Papyri in Aramaic with an English translation included. This is offered in order that the blind student can explore them, now, as never before.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Should you find correctable errors in the text of any of the files posted here, please let us know where they are located so that they might be fixed and others also be notified who may have previously downloaded the files. We are working diligently to improve the quality and accuracy of the digitized braille volumes. Anything dated before August 13, 2011 should be updated if possible. Additionally, no matter which files you may be embossing, any time, any where, it is always advisable to start with just a couple of pages to see that everything is OK. These files should have a formfeed every 25 lines.

A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew by J. Weingreen: Braille volume one has been updated as of September 22, 2011 and should be serviceable. Check dates on each volume for most recent revisions. braille volume 1 of 9 - print pages I-31 - 40-cpl, 25lpp.
A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew by J. Weingreen: braille volume 2 of 9, updated August 18, 2011 - print pages 32-64 - 40-cpl, 25lpp.
A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew by J. Weingreen: braille volume 3 of 9 - print pages 65-95 - 40-cpl, 25lpp.
A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew by J. Weingreen: braille volume 4 of 9 - print pages 95-135 - 40-cpl, 25lpp. Braille page numbering between volumes 3 and 4 have an apparent missing page which is not missing just misnumbered in volume 4. Remaining volumes posted soon.
Hebrew Lexical Tools in a zip file: Including the Lexicon from the Findit CD and the Hebrew-English and English-Hebrew Dictionaries from JBI. These digital files have been modified and should only be used with a braille computer display. As presently formatted, they are not suitable for embossing. Instruction files are included in each folder. These files were prepared by Ray McAllister, Phd. His contact info is included in the instruction files.

Sarah Blake has started building a page with links to various language resources for blind students. Included are instructions for making JAWS display Hebrew and Greek fonts on a braille display. A modified braille table is available for downloading.
The Jewish Braille Institute www.hebrewvisions.org is a website that may provide some additional options such as the modern Hebrew-English and English-Hebrew Dictionary by Ehud Ben-Yehuda.
