DOXOLOGY - SAY GLORY!

Proposition: To introduce the idea of addressing the subject of God's glory by the use of the word doxology in relation to grace revelation.

TRANS: If a doxology is a word of glory, it is important to understand what glory actually is. There are some specific things that are confusing to many people that take away the distinctiveness of this important word.


  I. WHAT IS "GLORY?" - ESTABLISHING A DEFINITION

     A. When You Say or Hear "Glory" What Do You Think?
        1. Light?
        2. Composition of God?
        3. Character of God?
        4. God's Measure?
     B. What Do You Think When You Hear Verses Like:
        1. Rom. 11:36:

KJV Romans 11:36  For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to
whom be glory for ever. Amen.

        2. Rom. 16:27: 

KJV Romans 16:27  To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever.
Amen. 

        3. Gal. 1:5:

KJV Galatians 1:5  To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

        4. Phil. 1:11:

KJV Philippians 1:11  Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which
are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

        5. Phil. 2:11:

KJV Philippians 2:11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

        6. 2 Thess. 2:14:

KJV 2 Thessalonians 2:14  Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the
obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

        7. Jude 25:

KJV Jude 25  To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty,
dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

        8. Rev. 1:5, 6:

KJV Revelation 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and
the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth.
Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

KJV Revelation 1:6  And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his
Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

 II. WHAT MAKES A DOXOLOGY A DOXOLOGY IN SCRIPTURE? - THE EVIDENCE FOR
     DOXOLOGIES IN SCRIPTURE

     A. The Approximation of the Number of Doxologies in Grace Revelation
     B. The Apostles in Their Writings and Doxologies
        1. Paul - 8 times plus once in Hebrews
        2. Peter - 3 times
        3. Jude - 1 time
        4. John - 3 times
     C. The "Amen" in Most (with textual problems) {129 Amen forms in 
        New TestamentT - 46 Amen's in Grace Revelation]
     D. The Absence of the Verb or Use of the "To Be" Verb
     E. The Addressing of the Doxology to Persons of the Godhead
        1. To God the Father - 13 times
        2. Through (dia) Jesus Christ - Rom. 16:27; Heb. 13:21; 1 Pet. 4:11
     F. The Ascription of Glory to the Father through Jesus Christ


TRANS: Let us take a look at some of the doxologies and their contents. They are generally diverse in their contents.


III. WHERE ARE DOXOLOGIES FOR THE CHURCH IN THE NEW TESTAMENT? - 
     THE EXPRESSIONS OF WORDS OF GLORY IN GRACE REVELATION

     A. The Recognition of Glory in God's Provision for Our Sins - Gal. 1:3-5

NKJ Galatians 1:3  Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord
Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from
this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to
whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

        1. Grace and Peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ - vs. 3
        2. Jesus Christ Gave Himself for Our Sins - vs. 4
        3. According to the Will of God Even Father
        4. To Whom Is the Glory into the Ages of the Ages
        5. Amen!
     B. The Resource for All Things - Rom. 11:36

KJV Romans 11:36  For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things:
to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

        1. Out of (ek) Him
        2. Through the Agency of (dia) Him
        3. Because of (eis) Him 
        4. To Him Is the Glory Into the Ages
        5. Amen!
     C. The Response to the Eternal Glory of God - 1 Pet. 5:10, 11

KJV 1 Peter 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his
eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you
perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. 11 To him be glory and dominion
for ever and ever. Amen.

        1. His Call Into the Eternal Glory of God - vs. 10

        3. The Configuration of the Believer by God Himself (All
           future acttive indicative 3rd person singular)
           a. He Will Adjust - katartizw (katartidzo)

TRANS: We can see something of the opinion of God toward Himself in what He has done for us. Our expression of glory is ongoing as His eternal character is manifested in His glory.
